Dennis Meredith Skaggs, an exceptional man of 76 years, slipped gently into heaven on October 1, 2025, surrounded by the love of cherished family and friends after a brief illness. Born under the Oklahoma sky on July 15, 1949, in Enid, Dennis lived as a devoted father, a loving husband, and a warm-hearted friend whose infectious spirit touched everyone he met. Dennis was married to his childhood sweetheart, Liz Goff for 27 years. Together they actively supported and raised their children, Lara, Amy and Jason in Lamont, Oklahoma. Dennis embraced a renewed sense of joy, joining in marriage with Marilyn Sue “Susie” Devoll, with whom he shared 29 years of deep devotion. Susie brought two children, Brian and Sarah, into their blended family. As their lives came together, they shared many years of laughter, happy moments, and fond memories. Dennis became the cherished “Dodah,” a name that warmed the hearts of friends and family. His devoted children and grandchildren deeply valued him, their beloved patriarch, whose kind spirit and steadfast affection etched a lasting impression on their lives. Throughout his life, Dennis wholeheartedly engaged with his two communities of residence. In Lamont, he devoted himself to service with the First United Methodist Church, the Lamont Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge of Lamont, the Lamont Cemetery Board, Lamont Housing Authority, the DCLA Athletic Booster Club, and as a steadfast supporter of the FFA. His children were certain he would always be present at their activities, never missing a single moment. He treasured sharing insights to help them excel as showmen or teammates. Dennis poured his heart into the Lamont Centennial Committee, eagerly seizing every opportunity to contribute to the town where he was raised. Upon relocating to Enid, Dennis actively participated as a member of the First United Methodist Church of Enid, where he served as a founding member of the Roosters Christ Care Group. He contributed in numerous ways to support the congregation including membership on the district board of trustees. In addition to church, Dennis served with the Enid Fire Civil Service Commission and had recently been named a Master Gardner by Garfield County Master Gardner’s. Dennis dedicated 46 years to his banking career at the State Exchange Bank in Lamont, where he forged enduring bonds with colleagues who became his cherished bank “family”. Starting as a cashier, he ascended to the esteemed role of President, reflecting his steadfast commitment and leadership. Known for his warm demeanor, customers regarded him as one of the kindest individuals, always greeting them with a smile. After retirement, he continued to contribute his expertise as a member of the bank’s board of directors. Dennis took immense pride in his grandchildren, making every effort to attend their events. Affectionately known as “Dodah the Donut Man,” he delighted them with donut holes that seemed to appear by magic. His deep passion for his alma mater, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, was his primary hobby, cheering fervently for his favorite team, win or lose. Alongside Susie, he became an Oklahoma Master Gardener, proving that even without a natural knack for gardening, his devotion to his wife remained unwavering.
Dennis leaves behind his beloved wife, Susie Skaggs; his brother, Lyndal (Maxie) Skaggs; his children, Lara (Jamie) Morris, Amy (Mark) Mayes, Jason (Amy) Skaggs, Brian Devoll, and Sarah Christensen; his cherished grandchildren, Jett Thompson, Mikaela Morris, Kynlee (Nick) Friesen, Olivia Christensen, Elizabeth Devoll, Karoline Skaggs, Mikenna Morris, London Birchfield, Annie Christensen, Alia Birchfield, and Jacob Devoll; and his great-grandchild, Ellie Jo Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Billie Skaggs of Lamont, and will be laid to rest at the Lamont Cemetery near his family.
