The services celebrating and honoring the life of Reverend Laura Kay Choate, 79, of Enid will be held Sunday, February 15th at 2:00 in the Brown-Cummings Chapel with Reverend Jeff Pino officiating. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings, A life celebration home.
Laura was born September 3, 1946, to Ernest Scott and Betty Ann (Crawford) Williams in Shreveport, Louisiana and passed from this life February 3, 2026, in Enid, Oklahoma.
She was raised and educated throughout the United States following her father’s career in the United States Air Force. She graduated from high school in Sacramento, California with the class of 1964. Laura briefly attended nursing school before marrying her first husband, Dennis Burkey and giving birth to their son, Steven. They made their home in Columbus, Ohio for several years before moving to Enid. While in Enid, Laura remarried to William (Bill) Choate and expanded her family by three more children. She committed her years to lovingly raising her four children. Throughout the years, she faithfully volunteered in her church in many areas including the benevolent and custodial ministries, and she regularly led services in the local nursing homes. All of these things were near and dear to her heart. She loved reading novels, studying and learning; she loved the Bible and she loved collecting porcelain dolls. Laura eventually went on to further her education, achieving a Master of Divinity degree at Phillips University. Her heart was for building relationships with people and pouring into their lives. She devoted her time to the ministry she loved as she was Reverend at the University Place Christian Church, Mamre ministry for many years. Through all of her ventures in life, her very best friend, advocate and adventure buddy was her sister, Anne, and they were life’s closest companions as they lived together for the last thirty years.
Laura was preceded in death by both of her parents, her beloved son Steven Choate, Bill Choate, nephew Kenneth Johnson, brother-in-law Ralph Reed, and her German Shepard, Rana.
She is survived by her sister Antionette Reed, of the home, three children, Kevin Choate and wife Jill, of Austin, Texas, Lori Fisk and husband Mike, of Springdale, Arkansas, William Choate and fiancé Stella, of Tulsa, 13 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters, Nettie and Nora, nephew Scott Johnson, dear friends and family, Jeff Pino and Brian and Caroline Campbell, and her fur babies, Precious and Marnie.
Laura was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Memorials may be made in her honor to Enid SPCA with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.
